A Personal Approach to Homeschool Testing
For more than 25 years, ATC Educational Services has helped homeschool families understand their children’s academic strengths and instructional needs. Our one-on-one appointments provide a supportive setting, immediate computerized results, and a brief review with your family.
Meet the Woodcock-Johnson V
Released in February 2025, the newest Woodcock-Johnson combines updated national norms, new assessment options, and digital tools to support efficient testing and meaningful educational planning.
What will testing look like?
Your child will work individually with an examiner, responding aloud, using a tablet for some activities, and writing in a printed response booklet for others. We continue to interact with and observe your child throughout the appointment.
What’s new?
✅ Updated national norms: Based on data collected with age-based comparisons available from age 4 through adulthood.
✅ Individualized test selection: Measures are selected to address your child’s needs and your family’s questions.
✅ Clear task introductions: Some tests include standardized video or audio instructions, with sample items that introduce the task according to testing procedures.
✅ Efficient administration: Built-in starting and stopping rules and scoring tools help streamline the testing process.
✅ Readable reports: Results can be shared electronically or printed and reviewed with your family.
The broader WJ V system includes academic achievement, cognitive ability, and oral language measures. The areas assessed depend on the service selected and the purpose of the appointment.
Want More Than a Score Report?
ATC’s optional Comprehensive Learning Analysis & Instructional Plan combines testing results, parent input, family goals, and observations with individualized recommendations. These may address curriculum, teaching strategies, organization, scheduling, and next steps.

North Carolina Testing Requirements
North Carolina requires an annual nationally standardized assessment for each enrolled homeschool student, covering English grammar, reading, spelling, and mathematics. The homeschool’s chief administrator is responsible for arranging testing. Neither DNPE nor the public school provides the tests or funding. If you have the ESA+ grant you may be able to use your class wallet funds.
Families with younger children may also choose testing for educational planning. Contact us about age-appropriate options.
